Yenagoa - The Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI) with support from the United Nations Democracy Funds (UNDEF) on Thursday November 13, 2025 organized an Environmental Portal Validation Meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

MAJI is a nongovernmental organization based in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria with a core mandate to deliver environment justice to the people of the Niger Delta and Nigerians at large.

Speaking to newsmen during the event, the Executive director of MAJI, Okoro Onyedikachi, who was represented by the Project Officer, Environment and Consultation,

Ikechukwu Ahaka, pointed out that the programme was to carry out a stakeholders portal validation.

He said: "this has to do with a media awareness, creating a portal that collates environmental data across communities of

impacted areas.

"We believe that data collection is very sacrosanct in engaging with stakeholders across board."

The Executive Director noted that the initiative has enabled stakeholders to collect data and use same to engage government agencies and key stakeholders to formulate policies towards ensuring a safe environment.

He stressed that over the years, MAJI had been carrying out environment friendly awareness campaign in the Niger Delta region, which is the epicenter of oil and gas activities which are the major causes of air pollution, using Rivers, Bayelsa and Aqua Ibom as pilot states.

The Executive Director further stated that through its environment portal validation, MAJI has been able to detect that airborne chronic diseases as a result of continuous air polluting oil activities had placed the Niger Delta as one of the dirtiest region in the world.

He lamented that air pollution had been proven to be responsible for prevalence of cancer and other killer diseases claiming lives of inhabitants of the oil-rich region on daily basis.

He concluded that to stop the industrial air pollution in the Niger Delta, data must be collected, collated, processed, analyzed and acted upon by the government and critical stakeholders hence the awareness campaign by MAJI.
