Yenagoa, Jan. 16, 2026 — Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called for a strategic partnership between the Bayelsa State Government, the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in large-scale agricultural production, as part of efforts to deepen the state’s agricultural revolution and strengthen food security.
Governor Diri made the call at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Peace Park, Yenagoa. He said the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited initiative provides a viable model that could be adapted to boost food production, create jobs and enhance economic resilience in Bayelsa State.
According to the governor, collaboration between civil authorities and the military in agriculture would not only support national food security but also promote innovation, discipline and sustainability in the sector.
“Beyond security, the Armed Forces have demonstrated capacity in other critical areas, including agriculture. By working together, we can scale up production, reduce food shortages and further empower our people,” Diri said.
The governor also urged Nigerians to continue to recognise and appreciate the sacrifices of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, noting that their commitment to the defence of the nation remains invaluable. He called for sustained support for the families of fallen heroes, legionnaires and serving personnel, stressing that their welfare must remain a national priority.
Governor Diri described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn reminder of Nigeria’s collective responsibility to promote peace, unity and national cohesion.
“This annual remembrance calls us to reflect on the cost of our freedom and the duty we owe those who paid the ultimate price in defence of our country,” he stated.
As part of the ceremony, the governor led security chiefs, top government officials and other dignitaries in the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph. Other symbolic activities were also performed in honour of fallen heroes who served the nation with courage and patriotism.
The event was attended by senior military and paramilitary officers, members of the Nigerian Legion, traditional rulers, religious leaders and representatives of civil society organisations.
